Isn’t forgiveness always required, while reconciliation is not?

I’m convinced by Scripture that forgiveness is not required where there is no repentance. But as I said, forgiveness is often wise and loving, even when there is no repentance.

Thank you. I struggle with this, as I hear that we should “forgive always,” and it’s for my own well-being, not so much the other’s. But, I don’t know if that’s true forgiveness, or just trying to forget and moving on. And what about “seventy times seven”? If God requires repentance, perhaps we can, too.

PS - One thing I am clear on, is that forgiveness doesn’t require reconciliation. That can lead to some very one-sided relationships and abuse.
