You will have to excuse me if I am slightly giddy this morning. I know us traditional Anglicans aren’t supposed to get giddy. But there is much joy on Twitter over Elon Musk taking over the platform. And that joy is contagious.
Why so much actual happiness from even me? A huge (yuge?) step has been taken in restoring free speech in this country. We do not yet know just what exactly Elon Musk will do to make Twitter a free speech platform. But indications are already encouraging. For one thing, the word is Donald Trump will be back very soon, perhaps Monday, while the Twitter lawyer that banned him has already been fired.
Love or hate Trump, banning a President of the United State from a speech platform was absurd and the stuff of Third World and totalitarian countries, as was banning The Babylon Bee, Project Veritas, True the Vote, Alex Berenson, etc.
And free speech is vital to a constitutional democracy. If one side is artificially amplified and/or the other side muzzled, it can rig an election, which is exactly what happened in 2020, thanks to Twitter among others. Remember the New York Post report on Hunter Biden’s laptop being suppressed? I do, and surveys indicate that suppression affected the election. Remember all the right-of-center accounts being shadowbanned and outright banned in 2020 and since? I do.
Trust that I could continue. Muzzling free speech, bad in itself, also affects elections, and 2020 should become a textbook case of that.
Muzzling free speech also affects the acceptance of elections and their aftermath. When people feel they had their say, they are more likely to accept elections. Also, when people feel they can have their say, they are more likely to participate in the political process peacefully. If instead you muzzle speech and rig elections, you are inviting anger and even violence.
So if Elon Musk indeed undoes the muzzling and rigging at Twitter, it will be great for both free speech and for our political process after three dark years for both. Of course, there is more work to do to undo the damage the Democrat/RINO establishment has done, much more (including voting!). But this is a very encouraging development.
But heck, enough explanation of what you probably know already. I just like free speech! And I can breath the fresh air of more freedom already!
By the way, I do have a Twitter account. (Unless you know me, you probably don’t know what it is. And no public speculation please.) And I am so giddy, I am thinking about changes to that account in light of Musk’s takeover. I know of others who are thinking of joining or rejoining Twitter. We shall see, won’t we. :)
