Mark, I read Rod Dreher’s post today. My thought is Rod is not necessarily wrong in encouraging high respectability to and from the President’s office. He covered all angles. But, what I see at play is most Americans see Pope Trump as funny because. . .

I am Orthodox. I came from the Christian Church, Kentucky Campbellite, no Creed but Christ movement from the American Frontier. My first experience in a Greek Orthodox Church included deep appreciation of the liturgy, which I had never experienced, and shock of seeing congregants bowing and kissing the hand of the priest. There was no way I would do that. I am Scots-Irish! I am American! I am Christian! There is no way I would ever bow to any man or King, except to my Lord. This sentiment is an inherent part of American culture. It is one of the reasons Tocqueville wrote, “"I do not know if the people of the United States would vote for superior men if they ran for office, but there can be no doubt that such men do not run."

Americans appreciate the common man and detest elitism. They do not like the aristocracy, even in religious leaders. So, when Trump posts a Pope Trump picture, most will not care and most will see it has hilarious. They know Trump defends Christianity, so Pope Trump doesn’t detract from his position as President, his post merely reinforces their admiration for a man that fights for the common man and against the elite in the deep state and the media.
