Good Monday morning. Some of you may noticed the big news in the Anglican world over the weekend. In short, most of the world’s Anglicans have stated that they are no longer in communion with the Archbishop of Canterbury and no longer recognize his authority. The GAFCON IV conference meeting in Kigali, Rwanda issued the Kigali Commitment which stated that and more.
I summarized the most important part of the statement and gave some thoughts over at Stand Firm. By the way, Stand Firm is must bookmark site for Anglican thoughts and doings. I occasionally contribute there.
I am thinking of writing a big picture substack post about unity, its limits and abuses that applies far beyond Anglicans, but that will have to wait.
Matt Kennedy’s twitter feed is a must follow for Anglicans.
His wife
was one of the drafters of the Kigali Commitment and is quite a writer with a distinctive sense of humor. Many of her substack podcasts include Matt and are great fun as she responds to his mansplaining and habitual meanness. Here is a good summary from the American Anglican Council.
The response from the office of the Archbishop of Canterbury was unintentionally amusing as was the headline from the liberal Church Times of England: “Gafcon meeting in Kigali rejects all existing forms of Anglican authority.”
Amongst the grumbling from the Church of England are those who say us rebellious colonial churches in GAFCON should not presume to describe ourselves as Anglican unless we continue to kiss Lord Canterbury’s ring. “That is just not done and must be stopped forthwith!” they harumph. Oddly, most of these whingers are dusty apostates who have no business describing themselves as Christians. As many of them are also cat ladies, I will be merciful and not link. I like cats.
Anglican Ink has lots of stories and is a must bookmark site on Anglican news.
If you think something else about GAFCON IV should be linked, feel free to do so in the comments. (But, as always, I will delete non-constructive comments, especially from non-subscribers. Thankfully, I’ve only had to do that once or twice.)
And, of course, you should subscribe to this my eclectic substack. But you already knew that.
