No, the title is not a typo. This post is not to apologize for my sins of 2023, although they are many, but to apologize for what I will be compelled to do with this substack in 2024.
No, I am not planning any big changes. This will continue to be a mixed up, eclectic substack for better or for worse. But there is one area of it I would like to greatly reduce, but I cannot yet with a clear conscience. That area is political matters.
I would like to keep my focus on faith, church and history. I would like to focus on these more. Maybe some of you would rather I do that, too. But what happens in 2024, particularly the elections but not only that, is too important to the United States and to Texas for me to be quiet.
For I am convinced that we are perilously close to a point of no return as a country — who would have thought that states would try to remove the leading opposition presidential candidate from the ballot, to give one alarming indicator. And that if we keep today’s Democrats in power, whether their POTUS nominee is Biden or Newsom or Harris, that we will then be past the point of no return.
I have no illusions that defeating the Democrats (and RINOs) will solve all our country’s problems. But keeping them in power will mean that matters will get worse, much worse, and likely beyond repair. I love this country and those who live in this country too much to do nothing, to say nothing.
I do not have any inflated illusions that I am all that influential. But I am blessed or cursed with an above average knowledge of politics and of political history, particularly of totalitarianism, a subject all too relevant now. And I can rite gooder than most. So it would be willful negligence and cowardice for me to remain quiet when so many are putting their freedom and livelihoods at risk to speak up. So speak up I shall.
At the same time, I know that some/most of you will get sick of politics in 2024. So shall I! So am I already! But there are times when to defend family, friends, church and country that a man has gotta do what a man has gotta do. So with God’s help and protection, I pray, I intend to play the man.
If that ends up rubbing the wrong way, well, I understand and apologize beforehand. But I don’t know how else I can look at myself in the mirror in 2024 and beyond. So I’d rather apologize for errors of courage now than errors of cowardice later.
God help us all and have mercy on us. We are going to need it.
Happy New Year?
Guess I should do the same thing--sorry in advance!! Happy New year!
That you for that but no apology needed for my feelings. I will keep reading even if only to confirm there are others who think (like me).
I am a volunteer catechist at my local church where I teach 3rd grade. In 2 weeks I will, for the 10th consecutive year, read and analyze MLK speech’Love Your Enemies’ it seems to be more relevant each year.
Happy New Year everyone
