I got a prediction for you today. It is a rather obvious one, but I see no one else making it, so…
Soon, probably before 2030, a big blue state or city will come hat in hand to Congress and to the President asking for a big bailout.
To me, the only questions are who will be first to ask for a bailout (I bet on Chicago.) and whether the President at the time will be a legitimate one.
Combine the financial recklessness of blue states and cities, which may even include profligate “reparations” soon, with the high crime that is driving businesses and non-criminals who can afford it to flee, and a Big Blue Bankruptcy is inevitable. Big spending combined with driving away taxpayers has predictable results. The profligates will come hat in hand to Washington sooner or later and probably sooner.
I would hope we would then have a President with enough backbone to veto any such bailout. Why should red states, who elect more sane and more responsible governments (Please note that “more responsible” is relative and not necessarily all that responsible.) have their federal taxes bailout profligate blue states and cities? Why should financial and moral bankruptcy be rewarded at the expense of the rest of the country? That would be real systemic injustice.
By the way, the coming Big Blue Bailout will increase our divisions even more. Blue states elect totalitarians who work to ruin America, crush our freedoms and plague us with criminals, but also want me to bail them out? NO! (Unspecified impolite words) NO!!
But if I were President, I would be reasonable about it. I’m nice that way. Say California or Illinois wants a bailout. I would say fine, on one condition: the state loses its statehood and becomes a territory, thereby losing representation in Congress and votes for President. They do not regain statehood until they pay back, without any additional bailout or incurring additional debt, every last cent. And if it’s a city asking for a bailout, it becomes federal district like D. C. without representation.
I am so reasonable I would also consider paying them to leave the Union. That would bail out the state/city and improve the United States. Win, win!
The blue state or city doesn’t like my reasonableness? Then I would VETO any bailout.
But 98% of politicians are not as reasonable as I. So I expect a bailout will be waved on through. Heck, multiple bailouts will be waved on through.
And sane Americans will get angrier and angrier.
I like your suggestions quite a bit.
